Stitch Fix reviews – January 2016

Happy January! The month of 2 Stitch Fix boxes! I have my frequency set to every 2-3 weeks because I want all the clothes I can get out of the fabulous Margaret.

If you haven’t heard of stitch fix, it’s a personal stylist box that gets shipped to you ever 2-3 weeks, once a month, once every 2 months, however often you want! You create an account, fill out a style profile, link them to your Pinterest board (this is pretty key to getting a good box!) and get a box with 5 items, then you keep what you want and send the rest back. There’s a $20 stylist fee that gets taken off your total if you buy something, and if you buy all 5 you get 25% off! Plus, you get a little note from your stylist with advice on stylings.

Stitch Fix Stylist Note from Margaret

I’ve been using it for a year and a half, because I am the world’s worst dresser/shopper and it’s really made a difference. Especially after a stylist change a few months back, my wardrobe has been changed so dramatically and I’ve stopped dressing like a complete slob. Plus, it’s basically stress free since I don’t have to leave home.

Late January

My second fix of the year! I asked for some long tops in this fix, because when I wake up it’s COLD in my house. So cold that I wake up and put on the warmest things I own – fleece lined leggings. They’re like a sweater for my legs and I own 6 pairs in various colors. Judge all you want, they’re amazing. I have a long torso (to make up for my short legs), so most of the sweaters I own aren’t long enough to wear with leggings. So I opened the challenge to Margaret and this is what she came up with!

Kut from the Kloth Kate Distressed Boyfriend Jean

Kut from the Kloth Kate Distressed Boyfriend Jean

As suggested, I paired these with my super cute suede ankle boots and cuffed them. These jeans fit amazingly, the material is sturdy and not really stretchy, which I liked, and while they’re distressed, it’s minimal distressing. Uncuffed, they’re basically a straight leg jean that fits perfectly. I also like that they gave a more relaxed, easy style than the rest of my jeans.

Unfortunately, I just cannot get behind this whole boyfriend jean trend. I think they make everyone’s legs look so short! And as a girl with short legs, I can’t be making them look shorter. I’m also not really a fan of distressed jeans. I just feel they probably won’t stand up to wear as well. However, I probably could have gotten passed all that since the fit is so perfect, if I didn’t already have enough plain blue jeans. So sadly, these are going back.

Verdict: Returned ($78)

Alice Blue Michaela Distressed Detail Sweater

Moving along to the Alice Blue sweater! I like the style of this. It’s different, cozy and the distressed detailing is actually really cute. It’s not quite long enough on me to be leggings worthy but I blame my long torso for that. I’ve seen pictures of it and my mom got the same sweater and it’s much longer on other people. It’s still a very cute sweater and I like the uniqueness of the whole thing.

Unfortunately, it’s not my color. That’s basically the only reason I can’t bring myself to consider keeping it. I cannot wear beige. It just clashes with my skin tone. Sorry sweater!

Verdict: Returned ($58)

11 Star Bretta Pullover Sweater

11 Star Bretta Pullover Sweater

If you head over to my Pinterest board you will see that it is indeed full of stripes. So I was really excited to see this sweater. The red is actually more burgandy/purpley than this picture is showing so it’s not as USA USA USA as it appears, though with the olympics this summer maybe I would have been all on board with that. Anyway, after I made my way through the skinny head hole (it’s weirdly small and not stretchable, so hair must be done after it’s put on) I fell in love.

11 Star Bretta Pullover Sweater

This is so cozy. I love the texture of the stitch, which I think makes it more unique and fun than a standard stripe sweater,  and the fit is amazing. It’s nice and baggy in the arms and through the body but still is fitted. It’s not long enough for leggings (again, I’ve seen pictures of this on people where it is long enough) but man, I want to wear this all the time.

Verdict: Kept! ($64)

Mystree Chamberlin Striped Drape Front Cardigan

Mystree Chamberlin Striped Drape Front Cardigan

As suggested, I plopped this cardigan on over the 11 Star sweater, and with the texture of the sweater and the stripes and the bulk of the sweater sleeves I wasn’t feeling it, so I put it on a with a solid shirt:

Mystree Chamberlin Striped Drape Front Cardigan

Much better! Alright, look at how this cardigan falls. the stripes fall as a V which is super flattering and cute. It’s also nice and billowy, but not overwhelming on my frame. It’s long enough that I could wear leggings and it’s really comfortable.

Unfortunately, I’m just not a huge fan of the gray of this sweater, maybe I would have liked it better in the red version? I have the gray JoJo cardigan already (which I still live in) which I just like more. I take my cardigans very seriously – last year I collected so many cardigans and felt really burnt out on them, so before I buy one I just want it to feel special. This one is fine, but it does feel special. It doesn’t have pockets or a hood or anything to contribute to cozy factor, and there’s almost a little too much fabric up top for me. So while I think this is very cute, i just didn’t think it was a cardigan I’d grab to wear all the time – even when the spring rolls around.

Verdict: Returned ($78)

RD Style Calandra Side Button Hooded Poncho

RD Style Calandra Side Button Hooded Poncho

Margaret asked what my favorite was and it’s this. This Poncho is absolutely my favorite thing in the box. It’s also a key example of why I love stitch fix.

RD Style Calandra Side Button Hooded Poncho

Would I ever in a million years pick up this hooded, side buttoned, faux short sleeves with longer sleeves masterpiece? Absolutely not. When I saw it was in my box I was so confused why this would ever be there. And then I put it on.

RD Style Calandra Side Button Hooded Poncho

Margaret’s right, I’m going to live in this poncho.

RD Style Calandra Side Button Hooded Poncho

It is so cozy. It’s nice enough to dress up a bit and can be worn really casually. The side buttons are a nice touch. The neckline is great. The hood is adorable. The faux sleeve layering is a nice touch.

I put it on and didn’t take it back off. The sign of a true winner.

Verdict: Kept kept forever kept ($68)

So, unlike with all of my other Margaret fixes, I’m only keeping 2 items. Does that mean this fix was a flop? Absolutely not! I loved this fix! It was fun to try on and style, the things I’m returning were really cute and I enjoyed them. And the two I am keeping are amazing. There have been times in a past when I’ve come away from fixes disappointed – I kept a couple things but didn’t really love them and everything else wasn’t me. This box was just exciting! I got a new piece in my closet that never would have been there otherwise, I got a sweater I’ll wear all the time, and I’m actually feeling good about the pieces I’m sending back. They were on track just not quite what I needed right now.

Fix #18

Stitch fix items laid out

Starting off the new year right – with a stitch fix box at my door. For this fix I asked for a mix of all weather tops and sweater weather stuff. I love that Margaret really thinks about what i ask her for and pays attention to my blog post sand my pinterest. She’s also so fun in her notes

Stitch fix not from my stylist MargaretI especially love that she called out my concern for the Papermoon top and gave me some options for styling (which she always does and helps a lot!). But let’s start with that Papermoon top:

Papermoon Akron Tie Back Knit Top – $54

Akron Tie Back Knit TopI sat on this top for a while. it is the exact right length – which I was shocked about for papermoon – it fits me perfectly and it has a cute back detail

Akron Tie Back Knit Top

So I sat on this because I was concerned about the price ($54 for this really did seem a steep) and because of the brand. Margaret’s right though, this is totally me. I love polka dots and bows and I’m enjoying adding more fitted clothes to my closet (since I’ve been getting mostly oversized stuff from them). In the end I decided to keep it because I got the buy 5 discount, and because of polka dots.

Verdict: Kept

RD Style Meredith Faux Leather Elbow Patch Cardigan – $68

Meredith Faux Leather Elbow Patch Cardigan

WP_20151229_017

Delivering on her promise for elbow patches, Margaret picked a cardigan which I’m really impressed with. It’s nice and cozy and a really pretty knit. While it has no pockets, it lays nicely and is a nice colored cardigan to use when I’m wearing gray. Plus, it’s a little dressier than my JoJo Open Cardigan, which I wear constantly. I like having the option to still be just as cozy but a little dressier. Also the price is right. It’s $20 cheaper than the jojo and is just as quality.

Verdict: Kept

RD Style Maureen Twisted Seam Elbow Patch Sweater – $64

Maureen Twisted Seam Elbow Patch SweaterI was so excited when I saw this in my box. I knew exactly why Margaret picked it and I would have picked it any day of the week based on the style card. But I was so so so disappointed when I put it on. I love RD Style (see my raving about their jojo open cardigan, the one above, and the la roda sweater I’m wearing as I type this). I think they’re great! But this sweater… I’ve discussed it with other people who received this sweater and we think it’s possible they mislabeled a batch of petite sweaters because this is just so short – in the sleeves and in the torso. Even the low part of the high low cut is still too short on me.

Maureen Twisted Seam Elbow Patch SweaterAlso for $64 I would expect to get a more substantial knit. This one just feels kind of flimsy. I’ve seen pictures of this top in other colors and it’s looked great, I don’t understand what happened to this navy one. But I found a petite girl who was interested in it so I kept it for her

Verdict: Given away

41Hawthorn Colibri Solid Tab Sleeve Blouse – $48

Colibri Solid Tab Sleeve BlouseI actually own this in a dark pink so I was excited to get it in another color. It’s a great top for work and it’s a nice color. I weirdly don’t own a lot of green so I’m happy to get some!

Verdict: Kept

Just Black Dolce Bootcut Jeans – $78

Dolce Bootcut Jeans

These jeans are so nice. I love the wash and all jeans I own are skinny so this is a nice variation. But let’s look back at the note from Margaret. “I was able to snag a bootcut jean that will actually fit your inseam AND you can wear it with heeled boots!” I love the idea of this! But when I tried them on:

WP_20151229_027

at 34″, they’re a little long. I’m pretty tall, but about 100% of that height is in my torso. I’ve had to cuff all jeans that have been sent to me a little. And those heels next to my feet are the tallest heels I own – which I never wear. My boots are max 1″. And here’s what they look like with my 3″ heels

WP_20151229_029Still too long. So while the thinking behind picking these was perfect, my shorty short legs pretty much ruined it all.

Thankfully, stitch fix customer service exists and they were able to send me a shorter pair. I am concerned they’ll be too short because I have no idea what my inseam is, but I’m hoping they’ll be perfect.

UPDATE: The 32″ inseam pair they sent me is awesome! They work with my boots as originally planned. They’re also not too outrageously long to wear with flats!

Verdict: Loved, exchanged, kept

Overall I loved this fix. It’s so very me and gave me things I didn’t even know I needed.
